Orange Day

One in three women in the world is subjected to psychological, physical or sexual violence during their lifetime. Whether at home, in public settings or during war, violence against women is a violation of human rights.

In 2008, the then UN Secretary-General launched the UN campaign UNiTE To End Violence Against Women to support civil society and the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence initiative. 16 days starts each year on November 25 on the International Day against Violence against Women and ends on December 10 on the International Day for Human Rights.

The UNiTE campaign is a multi-year ongoing global effort to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls in the world. The UNITE campaign has also been named Orange Day on the 25th of each month. As a bright and optimistic color, orange represents a world free from violence against women and girls. With the campaign, the UN calls on governments, companies, organizations, the media, civil society and private individuals to pay attention and take a stand against violence against women. UN Secretary-General António Guterres continues to run the UNiTE campaign - UNITE 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign.
In conjunction with Orange Day and on November 25 and for 16 days, the entire world is dyed orange to manifest against the violence. The world over lights well-known buildings in orange, people wear something orange and get involved by organizing events and manifestations to draw attention to violence against women.
